Part of the fun of a Catalina vacation is getting there. There are a few different options for transportation when you’re making plans to travel to our little island paradise: Take a boat ride from your choice of 4 different Southern California departure cities, or book a quick helicopter flight from one of 2 Los Angeles County locations. If you’re a boater (or you know someone who is) moorings are available in Avalon and its surrounding coves. If you’re a pilot (or you have a buddy who is), you can even fly to Catalina’s Airport in the Sky.

How to Get to Catalina Island

Whatever mode of transportation you choose to get to Catalina Island, chances are you’ll have stunning ocean views, possible wildlife sightings—like dolphins, seabirds, or whales, and some great first glimpses of the island and its gorgeous coastline when you arrive.  Read on to learn more about how to get to Catalina Island.

Travel tip #1: Make sure you can get there!  The island, like so many resort towns, has its busy season where hotels and ferries are absolutely booked with travelers. There is also a lovely off season on Catalina, when ferry and flight tickets have more availability. Be sure to secure your transportation for your specific travel dates.

Travel tip #2: Book the best accommodations for your stay. Catalina is not just for day tripping; you’ll want to stay for a while! The Aurora Hotel is a clean and cozy boutique hotel that is conveniently located in the heart of Avalon. Its location is walkable from the downtown ferry terminal, and its location atop a little hill makes it a great spot for beautiful views of Avalon Harbor. The Aurora offers a variety of rooms and suites with options for ocean views, larger spaces, and even a suite with a private sundeck and fireplace. For all of its guests, the Aurora offers access to an ocean-view roof top deck—a great place to read, relax, and take in the harbor scenery. Rooms also come with free wi-fi as well as a complimentary continental breakfast.

Travel tip #3: Consult with a concierge. The concierge at the Aurora Hotel would be happy to help you plan out your stay. From our hotel packages and specials to island dining and activities, our friendly and knowledgeable staff is ready to help you to explore the island at your pace. Visit local landmarks, tour the museum, find your favorite local restaurant, or book a fun island adventure like scuba diving or snorkeling with the help of the staff here at Aurora.

Voyage across the Pacific. If you’re planning to travel to Catalina by boat, there are two different ferry companies to choose from. Be sure to book tickets online ahead of time.

  • Catalina Express: With operations working out of San Pedro, Dana Point, and Long Beach, Catalina Express offers the largest fleet of boats with the most departures to the island each day. Known for their reliability and safety, Catalina Express vessels all have high speed ride control systems that aim to provide passengers with a smooth, fast channel crossing. Each boat in the fleet offers inside cabin seating and outside upper deck seating, as well as a full bar with drinks and snacks for purchase.

  • Catalina Flyer: Many travelers who are coming from south of Los Angeles opt for a trip on the Catalina Flyer, which departs out of Newport Beach. This 600-passenger catamaran has been in operation since 1988, and its travel time to the island takes about 75-minutes. There’s a sun deck, indoor seating, and a concession counter on this craft.

Travel tip #4: Go first class! Some of the Catalina Express boats offer ticket options for the Commodore Lounge or the Captain’s Lounge. These can be pre-booked through Catalina Express, and they come with a complimentary drink as well as priority check-in and boarding. On the Catalina Flyer, ask about options to upgrade to a VIP ticket.

Go sky high. If you’d like to maximize your island time and have a thrilling aerial experience, book a helicopter trip to Catalina through Maverick Helicopters. Rides take off from the Queen Mary terminal in Long Beach or from the Santa Monica Airport. From Long Beach, flights last about 15 minutes, and from Santa Monica, the trip is about 25 minutes. On all flights, you’ll see some scenic views of the Pacific, the mainland, and of course, Catalina.

Travel tip #5: Get more air time. If your helicopter transport wasn’t enough, you can book an aerial tour from Pebbly Beach on Catalina and take a 20-minute exploration ride to see the two island towns, the rugged interior, and the gorgeous cliffs and coves of Catalina—all from the sky.

Make your dream escape a reality. Book your stay at the Hotel Aurora, and enjoy the comfort and convenience of small town island living.  The Aurora is ready to be your home away from home while you enjoy all that Catalina has to offer.
